Frequently asked questions

Why go backwards to GIF?

Compatibility. Older forum software, some email clients and a few chat apps still only render GIF, and that is where the file has to end up.

How much bigger is the GIF?

Commonly two to five times. GIF writes whole palette-indexed frames with no inter-frame prediction, so all of WebP's savings are given back.

What happens to the color?

It is reduced to a 256-entry palette and dithered. Photographic frames show it first, as banding across skies and skin tones.

Is there a better fallback than GIF?

MP4, if the destination takes video. It is smaller than both and every platform plays it, but it will not sit in an img tag.
