Frequently asked questions

What is MNG?

Multiple-image Network Graphics, the animated companion to PNG from the late 1990s. Mozilla dropped support in 2003 and nothing picked it back up.

Why convert instead of just opening it?

Because almost nothing opens it. No current browser renders MNG, and most image viewers do not recognise the format at all.

Is any quality lost?

MNG can carry more colors than GIF, so the palette is reduced to 256 on the way out. For the flat graphics MNG was mostly used for, the difference is small.

Should I use APNG instead?

If you control the destination, yes. APNG is the direct successor to MNG, keeps full color, and every current browser plays it.
