Frequently asked questions

What do I gain by moving to APNG?

24-bit color instead of a 256-entry palette, and a full alpha channel instead of one transparent index. Gradients stop banding and soft edges stop fringing.

Will the file be bigger?

For photographic content usually yes, because more color is being stored. For flat graphics APNG often wins, and either way the edges come out cleaner.

Does APNG play everywhere a GIF does?

In browsers, yes. Outside them the support is patchier: several chat apps and older image viewers show only the first frame.

Does converting recover colors the GIF lost?

No. The GIF was already quantised to 256 colors and that information is gone. APNG preserves what is left rather than restoring the original.
