CSV Delimiter Converter

Switch a file between commas, semicolons, tabs and pipes, for when Excel in a European locale refuses to open a comma separated file correctly.

How to use

  1. Paste the CSV and pick its current delimiter.
  2. Choose the delimiter you need.
  3. Copy the converted file.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Excel mangle my CSV?

Because it uses the list separator from your system locale. In much of Europe that is a semicolon, so a comma separated file lands entirely in column A.

Which delimiter should I use?

Semicolon for European Excel, tab for anything that has to survive being pasted between apps, and comma when the consumer is a script rather than a spreadsheet.

What about values that contain the delimiter?

They stay quoted, and quoting is adjusted for the new delimiter so a comma inside a field does not split it once you switch to semicolons.

Is TSV safer than CSV?

Often, since tabs rarely appear inside data values while commas appear constantly. The trade is that tabs are invisible, which makes hand editing harder.
