Frequently asked questions

Why would I go from AVIF back to GIF?

Because the destination will not take AVIF. Slack, most email clients and older CMS uploaders still expect a GIF, so the conversion is about where the file has to land.

How much bigger does the file get?

Substantially. GIF stores whole frames with a 256-color palette and no inter-frame prediction, so a 200 KB AVIF routinely comes back as a 2 MB GIF.

What happens to colors outside the 256 palette?

They are quantised and dithered. Photographic frames and smooth gradients show the loss first, as banding or a fine speckle across flat areas.

Can I control the frame rate?

The output is fixed at 10 fps, which keeps the file usable at GIF sizes. For finer timing control, convert to MP4 instead and keep the original cadence.
