Frequently asked questions
Why do I have to enter the total duration?
The fade out is positioned by counting back from the end, so the tool needs to know where the end is. Enter the track length in seconds and the tail lands correctly.
What fade lengths sound natural?
One second in and two out is a safe default for music. For speech, half a second at each end is enough to kill the click without swallowing the first word.
Is the fade linear or curved?
Linear in amplitude, which is what ffmpeg's afade applies by default. It reads as a slightly fast start to the fade out compared with a logarithmic curve.
Can I fade only one end?
Yes. Set the side you do not want to zero and it is skipped, so you can drop a hard cut at the start while still easing out at the finish.
