Frequently asked questions

What is the Devine formula for ideal body weight?

Men: IBW (kg) = 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60). Women: IBW (kg) = 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60). The Devine formula is most commonly used for drug dosing calculations.

Why are there multiple IBW formulas?

Different formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) were derived for different populations and use cases. They produce slightly different values; the Devine formula is the most widely used in clinical pharmacy.

Is IBW the same as ideal weight for health?

No. IBW formulas are mathematical estimates derived in the 1970s–80s, primarily for drug dosing. BMI is more commonly used to assess healthy weight ranges.

What is the minimum height for these formulas?

The classical IBW formulas are defined for height > 60 inches (152.4 cm). Below that, they yield non-meaningful values and other height-based methods should be used.
