Frequently asked questions
How does stabilisation work?
Motion is tracked between frames to estimate how the camera moved, then each frame is shifted along a smoothed version of that path so the jitter cancels out.
Why does the picture get slightly cropped?
Because shifting a frame exposes empty edges. Zooming in a little hides them, which is why stabilised footage is always a touch tighter than the original.
Why does it take two passes?
The first pass measures the motion across the whole clip, the second applies the correction. The path cannot be smoothed until the whole trajectory is known.
What footage will it not fix?
Rolling shutter wobble and motion blur. Both are baked into the pixels of each frame, and no amount of repositioning removes them.
