Frequently asked questions
Why does anything use TOML?
It is meant to be edited by hand. Comments, unquoted keys and obvious section headers make a config file readable in a way JSON never manages.
What does not survive the round trip?
Comments. JSON has no comment syntax, so converting TOML to JSON and back loses every one of them.
How do TOML tables map to JSON?
A [section] header becomes a nested object, and [[array-of-tables]] becomes an array of objects. That is where most of the confusion between the two lives.
Does it handle TOML dates?
TOML has real date and datetime types; JSON does not, so they come across as strings. Converting back gives you a string unless you retype them.
