Slug Generator — Convert a Title to a URL Slug

Paste a headline and get a clean, URL-safe slug. Accents are folded to plain ASCII, punctuation is dropped, and long titles are cut on a word boundary.

Stop words removed when the toggle is on: a, an, the, of, and, or, in, on, at, to, for. If a title is nothing but stop words, they are kept so the slug is never empty.

What is Slug Generator — Convert a Title to a URL Slug?

A URL slug is the part of a web address that names a single page in words a human can read, usually the last path segment: in example.com/blog/how-to-bake-bread the slug is how-to-bake-bread. Good slugs stay lowercase, separate words with hyphens, and use only unreserved ASCII characters so no browser or CMS has to percent-encode them. This generator folds accents to their base letters, drops punctuation and emoji, optionally removes English stop words such as the and of, and truncates on a word boundary so the result never ends in half a word.

How to use

  1. Type or paste a title in the left box; the slug appears on the right as you type.
  2. Choose hyphen or underscore, toggle lowercase and stop-word removal, and set a max length.
  3. Turn on batch mode to paste many titles at once and get one slug per line, then copy.

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

A slug is the human-readable part of a URL that identifies one page, usually the last segment: in example.com/blog/url-slug-guide the slug is url-slug-guide. Slugs are lowercase, use hyphens between words, and avoid characters that would need percent-encoding.

How do accented characters become plain letters?

The text is normalized to NFD, which splits é into e plus a combining acute accent, and then every combining mark in the U+0300 to U+036F range is removed. Characters with no decomposition are mapped by hand, so ß becomes ss and ø becomes o rather than disappearing.

Should a slug use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator and an underscore as a word joiner, so red_shoes reads as one token while red-shoes reads as two words. Underscores are still useful for file names and database keys, which is why both options are here.

How long should a URL slug be?

Three to five words, roughly 50 to 60 characters, is a common target. Set the max length field and the slug is cut at the last whole word that fits rather than in the middle of one, so you never ship a slug ending in a half word.
