Frequently asked questions

Why does it have to be square?

It does not have to be, but 1:1 is the safest feed shape. A non-square animation gets cropped by the platform, and you have no say in where.

What size should I export?

480 by 480 is a good balance. Going much larger inflates the GIF without a visible gain, since the feed downsamples anyway.

Does Instagram accept GIF uploads?

Not directly in the feed. Convert to MP4 after squaring it, or post through a tool that handles the conversion for you.

Will the crop cut off my subject?

The frame is resized to the square you set rather than centre-cropped, so nothing is lost, though a very wide loop will look squashed. Crop it first if the shape is extreme.
