What is HP 12C Calculator?

The HP 12C is the RPN financial calculator HP has sold since 1981, still the standard in banking, real estate and finance courses. This HP 12C calculator online runs the full keyboard in your browser: time value of money (n, i, PV, PMT, FV), NPV and IRR on uneven cash flows, amortization, bond price and yield, depreciation, date arithmetic, statistics and keystroke programs. A side panel shows the four-level stack and the financial registers, and a paper tape logs every result.

How to use

  1. Click the calculator, then press its keys or type on your keyboard.
  2. Key a number, press ENTER, key the next number and press an operation or a financial key.
  3. Read the result on the display, with the stack and the paper tape alongside.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a loan payment on the HP 12C?

Clear the financial registers with f FIN, then key the term into n, the periodic rate into i and the loan amount into PV, and press PMT. For a 30-year mortgage at 6% a year, enter 360 n, 0.5 i, 250000 PV, then PMT shows -1,498.88. The sign is negative because the payment is money leaving your pocket.

Why does the HP 12C have no equals key?

It uses RPN (Reverse Polish Notation). You key the first number, press ENTER, key the second number and then the operation, so 5 ENTER 3 + gives 8. Intermediate results stay on a four-level stack (X, Y, Z, T) and you never need parentheses. The stack panel next to the calculator shows all four levels as you go.

Can I use my computer keyboard?

Yes. Click the calculator once to give it focus, then type digits, + - * /, Enter for ENTER, f and g for the shift keys, and n, i, P, M, V for n, i, PV, PMT and FV. Open Keyboard Shortcuts under the calculator for the full map of every key.

Are my registers and programs kept when I close the page?

Yes. Like the real continuous-memory 12C, the stack, the storage and financial registers, the settings and any program you keyed in are saved in your browser and come back the next time you open the page. Save memory downloads them as a file you can load on another computer.
