Currency Margin Calculator
Work out the selling price that survives an exchange rate, a payment processor cut and the margin you actually want to keep on a cross-border sale.
How to use
- Enter your cost and the exchange rate.
- Add the processor fee and the margin you want.
- Read the selling price it implies.
Frequently asked questions
Why not just convert the price at the spot rate?
Because the spot rate is not what you receive. Your processor takes a percentage and applies its own rate, so pricing at spot quietly eats the margin.
What fee should I assume?
Most card processors take somewhere near 3 percent on a cross-border sale, plus a fixed amount per transaction. Check your own contract rather than assuming.
Should I add a buffer for rate movement?
If your prices are fixed for a quarter, yes. A few percent of headroom absorbs normal movement without needing a repricing exercise every month.
Is margin the same as markup?
No, and mixing them up is the common error. Margin is profit over selling price, markup is profit over cost, so a 50 percent markup is only a 33 percent margin.
