Checksum Calculator — SHA-256 & More

Hash a file or a string with MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 or SHA-512 and compare it against a published checksum to confirm the download arrived intact.

How to use

  1. Drop a file or paste text.
  2. Read the MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 digests.
  3. Compare against the published checksum.

Frequently asked questions

Which algorithm should I compare against?

Whichever the publisher listed. SHA-256 is the current default; MD5 and SHA-1 still appear on older download pages and are fine for detecting corruption.

Is MD5 still safe to use?

For spotting a truncated or corrupted download, yes. For proving a file was not tampered with, no, since MD5 collisions are cheap to produce.

Does the file leave my machine?

No. The digest is computed in the page with the Web Crypto API, so a large or confidential file is never uploaded anywhere.

Why does my checksum not match?

Most often an interrupted download, or comparing against the checksum of a different release. Re-download and check you are on the right version line.
